I've never understood how Michael Palin's brand of television has not caught on in America. His travel shows, which began decades ago, amounted to one of the earliest forms of "reality television." Nothing could be more real than a man trying to get around the world in 80 damned days.
American television seems short on the kind of quality that Palin has been giving audiences for many, many years. And this is not just about travel. His special on Vilhelm Hammershoi might reek of being twee and obscure but it was anything but that.
