One of the reasons why we can't have nice things or a polite debate about terrorism and guns is because the Republican nominee for President has decided to air out his belief that the President is Muslim, that he hates America, and that he does not want to do anything about terrorism:
Presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump suggested “something is going on” with President Obama for him not to mention the words “radical Islamic terrorism” in the wake of Sunday morning’s deadly mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando. “We’re led by a man who is a very—look, we’re led by a man that either is, is not tough, not smart, or he’s got something else in mind,” Trump told Fox & Friends by phone Monday morning. “And the something else in mind—you know, people cannot believe it. People cannot—they cannot believe that President Obama is acting the ways he acts and can’t even mention the words ‘radical islamic terrorism.’ There’s something going on. It’s inconceivable.”
Later in the morning, Trump made similar suggestions to the Today show, telling the NBC morning show: "There are a lot of people that think maybe he doesn't want to get it. A lot of people think maybe he doesn't want to know about it. I happen to think he just doesn't know what he's doing. But there are many people that think he doesn't want to get it."
Trump has a long history of suggesting Obama is a secret Muslim who possibly sympathizes with radical terror attacks. During his “birther” attacks on Obama in 2011, Trump suggested the president hadn’t released his birth certificate “because maybe it says he is a Muslim.” And during an event in 2015, Trump outright declared, “I don’t know if [Obama] loves America.”
When you hear an old shill like Tom Brokaw complain about how both parties need to talk about this stuff, make sure you remember which side basically calls the other a traitor. And, let's not forget the one other thing that goes on behind the scenes when someone like Trump makes a really, really awful attack on the president's integrity and loyalty.
That other thing is this--the Republicans get away with this attack because they know that this president can control his emotions. You've seen Obama mad, but you have never seen him Obama SMASH mad because he knows that the racists in this country will use that to make him appear to be an out-of-control black man who cannot manage his emotions. They will use that example to demonstrate that he is given to fits of anger and cannot be trusted to lead the country. So, not only did Trump make an awful and very racist attack on the president in the wake of the Orlando shooting, but he also reinforced a significant piece of the Republican Party's longstanding playbook against Obama. They want to take away his legitimacy and they want to take away his right to be angry in public. They do not want him to use his position to inspire anger against their horrific bullshit. They want him to appear impotent and ineffectual.
This is why they taunt him like this. They know they can get away with it. Secretly, the Republican Party is absolutely in love with what Trump is doing. They just wish his racism were more genteel. Perhaps they can hook him up with old Trent Lott so he can see how it's done.
