This is Not the Minnesota I Remember

Whenever someone finds out I'm from Minnesota, they ask me if I've been to the Mall of America.

I've never been to the Mall of America. It was built when I lived there. I've been to the Met Center and Metropolitan Stadium, but I've never been to the Mall of America, which was built where those two places used to be. I haven't lived there since 1996 so I really don't have any skin in this game, but this is not the Minnesota that I remember. Somehow, some way, the relationship between the police and the African-American community there went down the wrong path and no one has figured out how to fix things. There hasn't been any statesmanship or leadership because what should have happened is this:

Black Lives Matter should have been invited to the Mall of America to say their piece. No one has to agree with them but everyone should celebrate the right to protest. Free speech being neither free nor easy, they should have welcomed the protesters and let them do their thing. Instead we get this nonsense, depicted above and from here.

What bullshit is this? When did Minnesota turn into a shit hole where people aren't allowed to protest? A wall of cops in riot gear--that's as welcoming as it gets nowadays. Where did the decent people go?
