Having never been to Britt, Iowa for the annual Hobo Convention, I am at a loss as to how to explain this to the rest of the world.
The Hobo Convention is an international event in Iowa that brings hobos from far and wide to a kind of celebration of being a practitioner of the hobo lifestyle. And while many people think of the Great Depression when they think of hobos, it's really more about a choice to live free of being tied down with an emphasis on certain rules and ethics.
Try and find some other celebration of being poor and homeless anywhere else; I'm not aware of anything that matches this.
Oh, and, every year, some old hobo gets to be the king of the hobos and, invariably, he cries his eyes out when they give him the honors.
