It would seem to me that identifying the mushroom in the field guide would be step one, not step five. Getting those steps in the correct order is necessary because, well, you can end up on dialysis or even dead.
I must have grown up in crazy town, because that's how I was taught to deal with wild mushrooms--very carefully and with extreme caution. I guess not everyone got that memo.
