We Keep Failing Our Veterans

Justin Miller shot himself after the Veterans Administration failed to provide him the help he needed:

When he went to the emergency department at the Minneapolis Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in February, Miller was trying to fix himself.

He sought help from the VA while struggling with suicidal thoughts – feelings of helplessness, frustration and anxiety. After spending four days at an inpatient mental health unit, he left the hospital, went to his car and shot himself. Police found his body the following day, his phone full of voicemails and texts from his father, Greg Miller, with one message sent over and over again: “I love you. We love you. Come home.”

His treatment at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System was the subject of a report released this week by the VA Office of Inspector General.

For the first two days of his stay at the facility, nurses marked in his medical record that Miller, 33, repeatedly asked about a treatment plan. According to investigators, he would never get a sufficient one. The inspector general’s office found VA staff made several mistakes in Miller’s case, including not providing him with an adequate plan when he was discharged.

When Miller left, he was marked at “moderate risk” for suicide. He left without a follow-up appointment for his newly prescribed antidepressants. Staff wasn’t sure whether he had access to firearms, and there was no documentation that they reached out to his family to try to engage them in his treatment.

“He went there for help. He took that step, did the right thing,” Harrington, 36, said. “He was there because he wanted to get better. He had made it clear he wanted to get better and didn’t know how. And they gave him no plan. He walked out those doors with no plan in place.”

There was no plan in place because the system failed to provide him the care and support that he needed. Multiply that by however many other veterans have been turned away, neglected, given Advil, or simply abandoned and you’ll see the continuation of the policies and procedures that have failed across both Republican and Democratic administrations. At least, under Obama, there was an effort to put competent people in place, but still. It wasn’t enough then and it’s not enough now.

How many more Justin Millers will there be in the days, weeks, months and years ahead? How many veterans are still being swept under the rug, given vague, disinterested answers before someone does something?

Accountability is the key. I support candidates who will fix these issues. I support spending more money to help veterans get the help they need. You wanna raise my taxes?

Raise them.

I don’t give a fuck. Help these people.

This Traumatized Nation

Wow:

There are plenty of reasons why sexual assault victims stay silent about their abuse. But there's a catalyst that spurs many to come forward.

When one person alleging sex assault faces the glare of the national spotlight, many more speak out in private.

That's what staffers keep noticing at RAINN -- the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. The nonprofit runs the National Sexual Assault Hotline, where calls have spiked since professor Christine Blasey Ford publicly accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of assault. Kavanaugh has vehemently denied the claim.

This is why people don't report sexual misconduct

On Thursday, the day Ford testified in front of senators and the whole country, the sex assault hotline saw a 201% increase in calls compared with a typical day, RAINN spokeswoman Sara McGovern said.

The country is suffering right now, all because one political party wants to see the other political party in tears. The violence and depravity of Trump has manifested itself into how we conduct our affairs now. Republicans fear the wrath of his base more than they fear the end of the country’s ability to exist and function.

I don’t understand the strategy at work here. In politics, you want to win, of course, but not so badly that it causes the other side to suffer so badly in defeat that they work themselves into a frenzy trying to even the score. You want your victories to look like delivering Obamacare—with compromise, with a close vote, and with enough for everyone to benefit from. If all of the red states that didn’t take the extra Federal funding had said, fine, we’ll eat this shit sandwich and join your exchanges, a lot more Americans would have health care. Instead, they cut off their noses to spite their faces in places and hurt their own citizens.

Every single day of Trump’s presidency has been catastrophic for decent people. Full stop. The reaction to this is a consensus understanding among everyone who cares about representative democracy that we have to destroy the Republican Party. You have people like me joined with former Republican operatives, Bill Kristol, the far left, the business-friendly elements in the middle, and whoever else and all of us know that the country is being pulled in the wrong direction.

November 2018 is just the start of what I believe will be a multi-generational collapse of Republican hopes for winning back the presidency. The demographic shift alone warrants a separate discussion. But if you’re 18-30 years old, and just now getting into the habit of voting, there isn’t anything that is going to convince you to pull the lever for any Republican ever again.

I mean, I remember when Michael Dukakis lost to George H. W. Bush. I remember that it was a chance to roll back the policies put in place by Reagan. I have been motivated to vote Democratic for the last 30 years because of that. For someone right now to be exposed to the Trump regime, and to care about human rights and dignity for all citizens, you have to believe that will never be a Republican who will appeal to them ever again.

Ever. the fuck. Again.

The Day That Broke The Senate

We have been subjected to a complete and utter shitshow since Inauguration Day, 2017. The entire government has been suborned by a corrupt celebrity pussy grabber who has no acquaintance with the truth. One of his loyal subjects is Lindsey Graham, Senator from the great state of Unhinged. You know how they make a lowlight reel for guys who have hit the big time in sports as a joke? Today’s videos of Graham coming unglued could constitute the lowlight reel to end all time. Any Democrat who runs against him in the future and doesn’t use video shot today is committing political malpractice.

The Senate is now a shambles, thanks to a decision from the Republican Party to put Trump over country. Normal is a long, long ways away. These clowns can’t even stage a one car parade if you spotted them the whole thing and left instructions not to alienate every woman alive. What a farce, Bart O’Kavanaugh. What a farce, indeed.

Kavanaugh’s tears elicited a fuck you from me that comes from the heart. You’re supposed to cry for what you did and how it hurt someone else, dumbass. You don’t get to cry because your judge career just went tits up. Maybe if you weren’t already an untreated alcoholic we’d have some basis of understanding you (correct me if I’m wrong, but why hasn’t anyone bothered to find out if Kavanaugh has ever been treated for his alcoholism?).

In the Trump era, there are Others, and they don’t matter to privileged white men. This can’t end soon enough.

I do not see where we go from here. The GOP will force Kavanaugh onto the Supreme Court, and then, God willing, decent people are going to have to find a way to remove him after the fact. Women are going to have to vote for Democrats and then hold their feet to the fire. This whole abomination of a supposed government cannot remain like this much longer or the republic will have to be put back together with baling wire, glue, and the concerted effort of everyone capable of repairing it. In the next five years, you could see the Supreme Court expanded to 11 justices, easily, just to mitigate the damage of the Trump era. These people behind him have constructed something so vicious and depraved, the only good that can come out of it is the destruction what they made.

You will see their works, and you will know that they have to be pulled down. Whatever these monsters are building is a temporary obscenity, a government fueled by ignorance, fraud, and immaturity.

I don’t know how anyone could hold their head up and not be proud of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and not want to vote Democrat for the rest of their natural lives. To withstand this evil takes a courage that reveals itself every day.

As I’ve said before, Goddamn these people on the other side. I don’t understand them, I don’t want to know what their lives are like, and I don’t know why they think ruining the country’s institutions gets them anything worth having.

How Could Anyone Vote For This Delusional Piece of Shit?

The President of the United States is a shitheel, and it’s all about him:

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that allegations of sexual misconduct against him "impact my opinion" on what he described as false charges against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

In extended comments during a press conference that lasted about 80 minutes on the sidelines of a United Nations meeting in New York, Trump portrayed himself as a victim of multiple made-up allegations.

"They made false statements about me, knowing they were false," Trump said of his accusers, adding that the The New York Times with misreported allegations against him during the run-up to the 2016 election. "People know that a lot of the news are fake, and a lot of the people sitting here are fake."

What do you do with all of that? It’s narcissism wrapped inside of delusional self-importance. Hey, asshole—those claims about Stormy Daniels turned out to be true. Those claims about Karen McDougal? All true. We’re parsing the rest, but it certainly looks like there’s a pattern there. You do some horrible shit, someone calls you on it, and after you deny everything, legal documents are produced that say, yep, you did it.

I have to believe that there are people who are just not going to stand for this.

Brett Kavanaugh Hates Women

Evidence that Brett Kavanaugh really doesn’t like women or respect them can be found on his high school yearbook page. I mean, honestly. What psychopath comes up with this stuff and has the nerve to make it a permanent statement of his own misogyny?

A woman who signed a letter supporting Brett Kavanaugh after he was accused of sexual assault earlier this month called revelations from his high school yearbook that showed he and his friends reportedly boasted about their supposed conquests with her "hurtful," The New York Times reported Monday.

Renate Schroeder Dolphin joined 64 other women this month who signed a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee saying they knew the Supreme Court nominee during their high school years and that "he has behaved honorably and treated women with respect."

However, Kavanaugh included "Renate Alumnius" as an entry in his high school yearbook page, and two of Kavanaugh's classmates told the Times the mentions of "Renate" were part of the high school football players' unsubstantiated boasting about their conquests.

When Dolphin, who attended a nearby Catholic girls' school and was then known as Renate Schroeder, signed the September 14 letter, the Times reports, she wasn't aware of the "Renate" yearbook references about herself on the pages of Kavanaugh and his football teammates.

This woman was clearly a supporter and was willing to sign her name to a document that vouched for his character. And yet, right there, in black and white, he all but boasted of how he had his way with her. The phrase “Renate Alumnius” is a coded reference (one of many depicted above) that should be explained in detail.

Kavanaugh, and numerous other male students, used that phrase to lay claim to the fact that they had sex with her. And now that she has figured it out, all these years later, she is justifiably angry and horrified:

Kavanaugh was one of 13 graduating seniors who referred to Dolphin in some way on their personal pages, the Times reports.

Sean Hagan, who was a Georgetown Prep student at the time, told the Times that Kavanaugh and his teammates "were very disrespectful, at least verbally, with Renate," and said, "I can't express how disgusted I am with them, then and now."

Hagan and another classmate, who requested anonymity, told the Times that Dolphin was a subject of their boasting. They said Kavanaugh and his friends wanted to memorialize their supposed conquests with the yearbook references.

Hagan said Dolphin "should be offended," and told the Times he was "completely astounded" when he saw she had signed the letter in support of Kavanaugh.

Beth Wilkinson and Alexandra Walsh, lawyers for Kavanaugh, told CNN in a statement that Kavanaugh "was friends with Renate Dolphin in high school. He admired her very much then, and he admires her to this day."

"Judge Kavanaugh and Ms. Dolphin attended one high school event together and shared a brief kiss good night following that event," the statement reads.

"They had no other such encounter. The language from Judge Kavanaugh's high school yearbook refers to the fact that he and Ms. Dolphin attended that one high school event together and nothing else."

Dolphin told the Times through her lawyer, "I think Brett must have me confused with someone else, because I never kissed him."

Four of the players who were pictured with Judge Kavanaugh in the photo captioned "Renate Alumni" told the Times it was simply a reference to "innocent dates" or going to dances with Dolphin. DeLancey Davis, Tom Kane, Tim Gaudette and Don Urgo Jr. said in a statement to the Times that they had "never bragged about" sexual contact or anything like that with Dolphin.

Michael Walsh, another student at Georgetown Prep, also wrote "Renate Alumnus" on his yearbook page, the Times reports. He also included a short poem, "You need a date / and it's getting late / so don't hesitate / to call Renate."

They sound like the best and the brightest, don’t they? Such honorable, respectful gentlemen.

I think what gets to me about this is that they lived in this bubble, and, with adults all around them, they were allowed to conduct themselves in this manner without any consequences. Who bought all of that beer? Who drove them around? Who gave them cars and money and access to places most kinds living in the District of Columbia could only dream of? Less than an hour away, kids in Baltimore didn’t have this kind of life. They grew up very differently than Brett Kavanaugh and the monsters who went to school with him.

What the hell kind of a country still lets these privileged pukes get away with this shit? Who is Kavanaugh to think that he deserves to sit on the Supreme Court and pass judgement over women and their right to choose?

Shame About That Country You Used to Have

If you look at everything that has happened in the last twenty-four hours, the conclusion that makes the most sense to me is that the Russians now control Trump, the rule of law doesn’t mean jack/shit, and unless a bunch of Republicans that have previously shown no courage suddenly find some, no one is going to save us.

The American people need to vote in such overwhelming numbers that any malfeasance or manipulation falls short. I highly doubt that will happen until we have massive unemployment, mass starvation, or a complete ban on Internet porn.

Seriously, what the fuck is it going to take for Americans to understand that their government doesn’t function anymore because it is inconvenient for the hapless clown who used Russian help to steal the presidency?

Brett Kavanaugh Likes to Get Kinky

What is it with Republicans who want to tell other people how to live their lives?

Senate Democrats are probing a new sexual-misconduct allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, The New Yorker reports.

The allegation stems from his time as a freshman at Yale University and is reportedly being investigated by at least two Democratic offices on Capitol Hill. Republican staffers were reportedly made aware of the allegation last week.

“This is another serious, credible, and disturbing allegation against Brett Kavanagh. It should be fully investigated,” Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) told the publication.

The woman, 53-year-old Deborah Ramirez, alleges that Kavanaugh “thrust his penis in her face” during a party. She said she pushed him away after his penis touched her. She claimed Kavanaugh was laughing, adding: “I can still see his face, and his hips coming forward, like when you pull up your pants.”

Ramirez was initially reluctant to go public, she says. But according to The New Yorker, she spent six days “carefully assessing her memories and consulting with her attorney” and eventually felt comfortable with coming forward. Now she wants the FBI to investigate the alleged incident.

“I wasn’t going to touch a penis until I was married,” Ramirez said. “I was embarrassed and ashamed and humiliated.”

Republicans don’t even know how to properly introduce themselves before exposing their genitals and shoving them in other people’s faces. This is the behavior of a young man who is entitled to forcing himself on others. If there’s one takeaway from the New Yorker article, it is that our elites are made up of some seriously fucked up people who should be registered as sex offenders.

Why would an entire political party go to bat for a jackass like this?

If the nomination isn’t pulled by noon on Monday, then it means there are no standards anymore. It’s not about putting an accomplished jurist on the Supreme Court. It’s about dancing around like a frat boy with no pants while liberal tears rain down.

Seriously, fuck these people. If Kavanaugh was a Democrat, they would have already burned down the government trying to stop him from being heard before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

High and Mighty Hypocrites

Reporter Dan Eggen has a great piece out today about the efforts behind the scenes to prop up the nearly-obliterated reputation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh. It certainly appears to me that Kavanaugh felt it was beneath him to give the people trying to help him some sense of what was in store for them when they were going to have to go to bat for him in this process. By refusing to tell them straight what it was that could sink his nomination, he effectively cut them off at the knees. I wouldn’t be surprised to see these people leak damaging information in retaliation if Kavanaugh fails to be confirmed. They are going to want to destroy him in order to show others that they need to play ball.

What strikes me about all of this is that no Democrat anywhere would ever be allowed to refuse to talk about their private life. We’re seeing this in Texas right now. Beto O’Rourke is having ads run against him because of a drunk driving incident in the last century. What you did in the Nineties and Eighties isn’t going to go away, man. And, with regards to Kavanaugh, it doesn’t matter if he was in high school. The Republicans love it when a juvenile is tried as an adult for their crimes; they love to see young African-American men blown away or sent to prison for seventeen life sentences. It’s this curious embrace of the rule of law that has them all hot and bothered to establish Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court where he can cover their Law and Order loving flanks.

Let’s examine the hypocrisy that exists right now:

What more do you have to say? This guy was a pervert’s pervert in his day job working for Ken Starr. And you’re telling me he should be trusted? Really?

There’s no way any Democrat would be allowed to proceed to a vote based on what we already know about Kavanaugh. Grassley, Hatch and McConnell would have burned down the Senate and thrown the desks into a pile by now. We all know this. We know they are just fucking hypocrites, through and through. They only care about getting a win that causes pain to others. If Kavanaugh had been Bill Clinton’s Staff Secretary, you’d already have every piece of paper he ever touched in a searchable database, ready for the perusal of a few thousand wannabe sleuths.

My guess is that they’re going to hang him for not telling them what they needed to know. He should have been more candid about his private life. If they go to war for him, they’re going to be hoisted on their own petard if someone somewhere has a critical piece of evidence that makes Kavanaugh look like a rapey, flaming douchebag.

That Look on Your Face Says it All

Ted Cruz laughs while Beto O’Rourke points out that Cruz has visited all 99 counties in Iowa and missed half of the roll call votes in the U. S. Senate in 2016 when he was running for president.

That look on Cruz’s face says it all. He showed up thinking that his superior debating skills would bury Beto. Instead, he has had his ass handed back to him in a wet plastic bag full of shame and degradation.

Follow the link and watch the video. This is how you debate a Republican in the age of Trump.

Did Brett Kavanaugh Lie to the FBI?

Brett Kavanaugh really doesn’t want to have to sit down with the FBI and talk about the accusations against him:

[Senator Charles] Grassley continued Wednesday to resist calls by Democrats and [Dr. Christine Blasey] Ford for an FBI investigation into the claims against Kavanaugh.

"We are doing everything that we can to make Dr. Ford comfortable to coming before the committee in an open session or a closed session, or a public or a private interview," the Iowa Republican told reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday. "That's four different ways she can choose to come. So, I'm not worried about anything other than just focusing for the next few days on encouraging her to come."

They want to sweep this under the rug and make it a simple case of 'he-said, she-said’ before all of this is over. I believe that this is because the FBI has already asked Kavanaugh a slew of questions about his behavior, his use of alcohol and drugs, and whether there is anything in his background that would cause someone to question his ethics or judgement. They have likely asked these questions of Kavanaugh several times, since this is standard for how the FBI does background checks into Federal officials who are being appointed as judges or Supreme Court Justices.

So, at least twice now, Kavanaugh has given sworn statements to the FBI. What’s the chance that he was forthcoming and honest, given the fact that he’s had a history of not telling the truth?

If you think about it this way, the people shepherding Kavanaugh through this process already know that there are women who are going to come forward and make these accusations. They know that, when Kavanaugh was up for the Federal bench during the Bush years, he lied about those incidents and he lied about how he behaved in college. He lied because he believed there were enough people to help create a firewall between him and the truth. He lied because he’s a privileged frat boy who can’t help but stumble drunkenly and recklessly through life. Someone else will clean it up; someone else will pay off his debts and he’ll get a free ride for the rest of his life because he went to the right schools and served the right masters.

What these people backing him knew, going into the confirmation hearings, was that he had to be protected from having to talk to the FBI again. And why is that?

They probably suspect, and I strongly suspect, that there are people who have damning evidence of Kavanaugh’s behavior in high school and college. Pictures, testimony, statements made at the time, diary entries, and things of that nature. Impossible to refute stuff. They know this is out there, and if he goes in front of the FBI and lies again, this evidence will drop like a ton of bricks.

Oh, and Kavanaugh will go to prison for lying to the FBI.

That’s why Grassley won’t let the FBI investigate this, as per usual. They know this nomination is toxic and they’re about to put a severely compromised individual who has no business being a Supreme Court Justice through a confirmation process that is completely and utterly illegitimate.

This is a sham, and it’s an outrage, and it will lead to these same senators having to vote to impeach and remove Kavanaugh from the bench after a lengthy, drawn-out process none of us should have to live through.

They know it, and they’re too fucking weak and cowardly to admit it.

Goddamn these people. Goddamn all of them.

Ted Cruz Likes Porn

Ted Cruz is ridiculous, of course:

Barbecue has once again made its way into national political discourse. This time, lawmakers are not laughing about the authenticity of the Brooklyn version like they were in March, but instead, the fate of its existence in the Lone Star State.

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who is locked in a tight fight for his seat with Democratic Rep. Beto O'Rourke, lampooned his opponent in a warning to Texas voters on Twitter Sunday: "if Beto wins, BBQ will be illegal!"

I would be leery of any politician who tries to “humanize” themselves with humor or satire without actually being good at it first. Cruz is no Al Franken.

I would also caution people to avoid using summary judgements about people. One of the things I’m anticipating is for the GOP to use something against Beto O’Rourke that is poorly sourced, made-up, or just plain crazy.

A reminder, though, that this actually happened:

Some party of family values, huh?

Ted Cruz can try to humanize himself all he wants, but, at the end of the day, he’s just another beta cuck with no control over what gets liked on his Twitter feed.

Privileged Liars

Brett Kavanaugh and Mark Judge are at the center of a larger story right now. Namely, who is the bigger douchebag and why do they get to be part of the elite in this country? The world they come from sounds like something out of a bad movie:

President Donald Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, is being accused of sexually and physically assaulting a 15-year-old girl at a party during his high school years.

Kavanaugh has repeatedly denied the allegations, but his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, says there was one other person in the room when the alleged incident took place: Kavanaugh's then-classmate, Mark Judge.

The fate of Kavanaugh's nomination is hanging in the balance as Republicans and Democrats debate allowing a full investigation to take place.

Judge, a journalist and filmmaker, has also denied that the incident took place.

"It's just absolutely nuts. I never saw Brett act that way," Judge told The Weekly Standard in an interview on Friday. CNN has been unable to reach Judge for comment despite repeated attempts.

Now that Judge's recollection of the alleged event could become a focal point for all those looking into the accusation, flags have been raised regarding his own past writings.

Judge wrote the book "Wasted: Tales of a Gen X Drunk," where he details his experiences of extensive drinking while attending Georgetown Preparatory School.

Judge writes that he is "shocked" about what he got away with in high school -- recalling beach parties that hundreds of people would attend.

At another point he describes his high school as "positively swimming in alcohol."

Judge also references a "Bart O'Kavanaugh," who he writes vomited in someone's car. It has not been confirmed whether this is a reference to Kavanaugh.

The impression I get is that they are both a couple of half-bright liars, used to having their way with the world. When a Christine Blasey Ford shows up, it shatters the veneer they have tried to place over how they have acted their whole lives. In order to be palatable to the conservative movement, they have to have the moral authority to tell women what to do with their bodies. You can’t admit to a lifetime of being a serial abuser or harasser of women with an early history of sexual assaults and frat-boy thuggery if you want to be in charge of everything, right?

Both of these men are exactly why we ended up with Trump. He is the template for how privileged white men have been able to fail upwards in this country since it was founded.

Texas Has a History Problem

This seems like click bait to me, but I am obligated to say something because it’s the kind of thing you can’t ignore:

The Texas State Board of Education voted Friday to remove mentions of Hillary Clinton and Helen Keller from the state’s mandatory history curriculum — but will keep in Moses’ influence on U.S. founding documents, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The changes are part of an effort to selectively ”streamline” information in history classes for some 5.4 million schoolchildren.

As a part of the board’s assessment, each historical figure was given a numerical importance rating from one to 20 by committee members, according to the newspaper. Clinton, the first woman in U.S. history to win a presidential nomination by a major political party, only ranked a five. Keller, a writer and activist born in 1888 who was the first deaf and blind American to earn a college degree, rated a seven.

Local members of the Texas legislature rated a 20. All students are required to learn about the current U.S. president, so Donald Trump was not assessed.

Texas Monthly reported that board members had considered cutting a “value-laden” phrase about “all the heroic defenders who gave their lives” in the 1836 battle of the Alamo against Mexican soldiers in what was then Mexican Texas. One state official called it “politically correct nonsense,” and the board chose not to drop it.

“In Texas, you don’t mess with the Alamo and you don’t mess with our Christian heritage,” Texas Values President Jonathan M. Saenz said in a statement. “We applaud the majority of the State Board of Education for doing the right thing by restoring our foundational rights and history.”

You can just see the bias working here, and you can well imagine that the people making these decisions felt like they were on the side of the angels. In point of fact, they’re just part of a larger problem, which is, Texans don’t vote.

If you don’t like what they’re doing, vote the Republicans out of office in Texas. Once you’ve done that, make it known that the Texas State Board of Education should not be made up of dingbats and nincompoops. It’s not difficult.

Teaching history begins in the home. Do you talk to your kids about what’s going on? Where you came from? How things got to be the way they are? If you do, then nothing that an organization or board like this does even matters. You don’t need to worry about the curriculum choices of a handful of idiots. And never leave it to any school system to educate your children completely and utterly without the context necessary to understand what you believe in and what you value.

These people howl when you question their motives. They wear their hatred and their ignorance on their sleeves. Do whatever you can to throw them out of office if you live in Texas. It won’t stop decent people from teaching their kids about Hillary Clinton and all that she has accomplished.

Oh, and naming a few schools after her would be the icing on the cake.

Stupid Is As Stupid Does

Byron York is the future of conservatism, and you can tell this just by looking at how he wisely begins to question whether or not actual fucking treason is really just that or just kind of “treason-y” because, well, everyone around Trump is going to prison.

Everyone.

One of the things I enjoy about having my own stupid website is that I can use the word treason and I don’t have to worry about whether or not someone is going to shout it back at me and try to make it seem like Trump, et al, did not commit treason when they worked with Russia to steal the 2016 election.

If that’s not treason, then what is? And if we already know that Paul Manafort is guilty of a conspiracy to defraud the United States, how far are we away from finding out how they did it and which Russians helped them?

I’m tired of these assholes. They don’t know when they’re beaten.

Willie Nelson Wants You to Vote For Beto O'Rourke

The great Willie Nelson has had enough of the bullshit. He’s going to appear at a massive rally in Austin, Texas and he wants you to be there.

Oh, hey—no big whoop but over 26,000 people have already signed up for this rally:

This is how people are choosing to spend their Saturday night in Austin.

Really, what’s happening here? Is it a revolution? Is it something more than that?

The President is Supposed to Defend the Press

The best trick Donald Trump ever pulled was to make people think that he did not have to act presidential:

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who typically tries to stay out of the political fray, mounted a vigorous defense of press freedom on Thursday evening, saying President Donald Trump should be glad to face media scrutiny.

The remarks came during an hour-long, freewheeling conversation with hedge fund billionaire and philanthropist David Rubenstein at an annual gathering of the Economic Club of Washington, which Rubenstein leads. After discussing the success of the Washington Post, which Bezos bought in 2013, Rubenstein asked how Bezos responds to criticism — some of which comes from Trump's Twitter feed — of Amazon (AMZN) and the Post.

"I don't feel the need to defend Amazon," Bezos said. "But I will say this: I do think it's a mistake for any elected official to attack media and journalists."

Decent people should not be in agreement with Jeff Bezos. We should be bitching at him to pay his workers more. But, here we are, on the right side of the issue that has been there since day one—Trump can’t stand up to any scrutiny because he is inherently corrupt. So, of course, he’s going to attack the media. They have the goods on him.

Trump’s job is actually pretty easy. He’s working, at best, a few hours per day and he’s playing golf like he retired a decade ago. All he has to do is not do the horrible shit he seems incapable of not doing. If he were to appear every couple of days, wave at a camera, and walk off with a smile, his approval rating would be in the high 70s.

Instead, we’re treated to the sickening display we’ve seen over the last week, which left me incapable of really writing anything or functioning because how do you respond to a daily avalanche of filth? How do you respond to a man who doesn’t believe 3,000 people died? Or that he and Paul Manafort didn’t do anything wrong when, clearly, they did?

Can’t someone end our misery?

The Stumblebum in Chief

Trump received a “briefing” today about Hurricane Florence, and then proceeded to put his foot in his mouth. He said said the way that he and his vast army of incompetent fools managed the emergency situation in Puerto Rico last year was an "incredible unsung success.” Maybe doing that was a little foolish because reminding everyone how nearly three thousand American citizens died on your watch because you didn’t have a clue, a plan, or anyone running the response agencies tends to drive home the fact that you need to actually fucking govern the country while you’re ripping it off.

Oh, but then the bottom fell out of everything tonight:

Sen. Jeff Merkley released a document Tuesday showing a transfer of nearly $10 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and accused President Donald Trump's administration of diverting funds from hurricane relief just as hurricane season was starting.

However, the document from the Department of Homeland Security specifically mentions the money would come from the agency's budgets for travel, training, public engagement and information technology work. The department denies that the money came from disaster relief funding.

Merkley, a Democrat from Oregon, said on MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" that the administration is taking money from "response and recovery" and "working hard to find funds for additional detention camps."

"I would dispute the statement that this has no bearing on ... addressing the challenges from hurricanes," Merkley said.

FEMA, which is now run by hideous, screaming jackals who support the president like the last handful of overweight gefreiters in Hitler’s bunker in Berlin, put out a dutiful statement claiming that this shell game really didn’t rob Peter to pay Paul. And yet, right there on the documents that Merkley presented, was proof that about ten million dollars has been moved from FEMA response operations into a fund where ICE can use it to throw babies in jail.

Hey, North Carolina and South Carolina—you voted for this asshole. Bend over, and enjoy what’s coming. Maybe next time electing a president who makes liberal tears flow will be a lot less important than ensuring that you have roofs, walls, drinking water and a place to dry off for the next month.

Ted Cruz is Going Down in Flames

The Senate race in Texas has shifted into overdrive and it has become the one to watch. Television stations are running ridiculous negative ads, and Ted Cruz is scared:

The Republican Party’s deep-pocketed political spenders are stepping up to prevent the once unthinkable: a U.S. Senate loss in deep-red Texas.

A pair of GOP super PACs are dropping significant sums into the Lone Star State as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) faces a challenge from Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) that’s become far too competitive for comfort. As a reflection of how real—if still unlikely—they are taking the threat of a Cruz defeat, the sums spent have suddenly skyrocketed.

Beto has been campaigning everywhere in Texas. He's insulated himself from these attacks by being open and forthright in front of voters wherever he can find them. Ted Cruz is running in the wealthy enclaves of Houston and Dallas, barely bothering to reach out to people who have already had three or four chances to hear Beto speak in person.

Can the native-born O'Rourke beat Canada's very own Cruz? Yes, if people get off their asses and vote.

Senator Elizabeth Warren Went There

This is the most powerful and necessary statement against Donald Trump so far:

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, seizing on an explosive op-ed from an anonymous administration official, said Thursday that it's time to use constitutional powers to remove President Donald Trump office if top officials don't think he can do the job.

"If senior administration officials think the President of the United States is not able to do his job, then they should invoke the 25th Amendment," Warren told CNN. "The Constitution provides for a procedure whenever the Vice President and senior officials think the President can't do his job. It does not provide that senior officials go around the President -- take documents off his desk, write anonymous op-eds ... Everyone of these officials have sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States. It's time for them to do their job."

They are not going to do their job. They are going to cut and run. They are afraid of losing access, power, and influence because their personal fortunes mean more than anything in the world. They don't care about the future, they don't care about the country, and they don't care about their own fucking children. They care about money, and going against Trump is the one existential threat they cannot stomach. The sickening rot of money has infested everything in Washington D.C. It's time to move against all monied interests everywhere and restore the Goddamned republic or everything will be lost.

All around us are cowards, except for Democrats like Elizabeth Warren.

Remember Ron Fournier?

Trump is a Failed President, Of Course

You did not need Bob Woodward to tell you that the presidency of Donald Trump is a complete and utter fiasco, and a failure of Biblical proportions. You already knew that.

What I think is missing here, among all of the stories and hot takes about how bad things are, is a media correction that says, "Trump has failed." It's time for the media to begin to say, "the Trump presidency is a failure, and America needs to go in a different direction."

Every time I turned around during the Obama years, all I ever heard from the media was, "Obama is failing to lead, Obama needs to tell Congress what to do, and Obama needs to provide leadership."

Fuck that. Obama was the best president of my lifetime. They wrote those things about him because, as members of the elite media, they were jealous that someone their age or younger was so much better at leading this country than say, oh, I don't know, the cranky old fart who called them dumbasses and jackasses whose name rhymed with John McCain.

I want to know, where is the media narrative that was shoved down our throats when Obama was "failing" as president even though he plainly wasn't?

Where are the stories?

Who is writing that "Trump has failed?"

Not enough of these stories are being written.

He failed to pass meaningful legislation until they rammed through a debilitating tax cut. All of his immigration policies are racist. His foreign policy is a debacle repeated for each situation. His economic policies have largely benefited from the fact that Obama left him a pretty good economy which Trump has done his best to ruin. He has not connected with decent Americans, enjoying popularity only with the fringes of American discourse and your garden variety racists/Nazis/members of the Pence family. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will not realign itself with the Republican Party for the next thirty years. Even the Goddamned staffers are unhappy and disgruntled. Oh, and whatever happened to Camp David? One of the greatest presidential perks has sat unused and neglected. I hope someone is trimming back the weeds.

There is nothing positive to say about this shitheel of a man. Everything has ended in failure, and all that is left is for someone to escort him to the door. A reasonable person would have resigned by now, shamed by an incomparable level of incompetence and venality. This feeble man probably shits himself, daily, and when this is revealed, no one will bat an eye.

White Power Signs Just Happen to Appear Around Trump Supporters

A woman named Zina Bash sat behind Brett Kavanaugh today and made what appears to be a "White Power" hand gesture.

First of all, I don't think it was a hoax. How could anyone be this deliberately obtuse and have no self-awareness in a public setting?

Second of all, I think it was done to get a rise out of people, specifically lame-assed bloggers like myself.

And, third, these are some horrible fucking people doing the same exact thing and none of this shit is happening by accident:

Whenever you see supporters of Donald Trump throwing the "OK" sign, they know that it will be interpreted as a White Power hand gesture. They laugh about it! They think they're clever. That's how we live our lives now--it's okay to be a white supremacist so long as you're trolling liberals and riding on the Trump Train.

Bash was not "resting her hand" in a random manner. She was throwing this sign out to the people who are going to know what it means.

This is not being done innocently. It's deliberate, and we all know it is used to motivate the sickening faction that wants this country to reject decency, and it's done for one reason, and one reason only--to encourage support for a political ideology that is based on white supremacy. This is done to rally the base of the Trump Party. It's the base they think they can count on when everything turns to shit on a daily basis.

You know, these ridiculous shitbags:

Fuck those guys. Half of them don't even have jobs anymore.

And why is being done? It's being done so that we'll all pay attention to it instead of the fact that Kavanaugh shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court because he will vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, he'll defend corporate interests, and he'll protect Trump from prosecution.

Look, there's even a fellow who can say, unequivocally, that Zina Bash couldn't possibly be a supporter of white supremacy:

Oh, isn't that nice? She has a friend who can vouch for her. Well, it's all good then, right?

Nope.

You're all still horrible fucking people.

Video playback shows an even more damning sequence of events, painting a pretty disgusting story. Watch as Bash receives a text on her phone, reads it, smirks a little, then folds her arms and places her fingers very deliberately into that white supremacist signal. Her head stays still, but she smiles a little, and her eyes dart around clearly looking to see if cameras can see her, or if people notice.

This is even more despicable for having taken place while Diane Feinstein, highest ranking Senator on the committee, and Jewish, was speaking. Those white supremacists sure are subtle, aren't they?

Yes, they are.

There Is No Decent Version of Trump

This lengthly excerpt is all you need to know about what's really in Trump's heart:

Bob Woodward's upcoming book offers new insights into President Donald Trump's anger over advisers' efforts to clean up his explosive "both sides" remark on the violence last year at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author's new book, "Fear: Trump in the White House," is being released September 11. CNN obtained a copy.

Trump's August 2017 remarks concluding there was "blame on both sides" for the violence was a stunning moment early in his presidency that ignited a backlash over his views on race and consumed the White House for days. The new revelations may reopen that debate.

In the book, Woodward describes how then-White House staff secretary Rob Porter worked with Trump to write a second speech to try to repair his initial comments about violence at the marches.

Porter tried to convince the President he needed to clarify his remarks. But Trump appeared to resist, according to the book, repeatedly saying: "I don't know about this. ... This doesn't feel right to me."

Eventually, Trump agreed, and two days later in a televised speech he denounced racism, the "KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other hate groups." Woodward describes how White House aides were relieved, and chief of staff John Kelly encouraged staff to tell the President what a good job he did.

But then Trump turned on the TV.

Hold on to your ass, Fred.

One Fox News commentator gave Trump praise but also added, "That's almost an admission of 'Okay, I was wrong.'" Then Fox News correspondent Kevin Corke said: "Some 48 hours into the biggest domestic challenge of his young presidency, Mr. Trump has made a course correction."

Trump exploded at the coverage, Woodward reports. "That was the biggest fucking mistake I've made," the President told Porter. "You never make those concessions. You never apologize. I didn't do anything wrong in the first place. Why look weak?"

Trump continued venting to Porter, Woodward writes. "I can't believe I got forced to do that," he said. "That's the worst speech I've ever given. I'm never going to do anything like that again."

One day later, Trump spoke at an unrelated Trump Tower event, where he surprised his staff and doubled down on his original sentiment that "both sides" were to blame for the violence, equating white supremacists with what he termed the "alt-left."

"You had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent," Trump said. "Nobody wants to say it, but I will say it right now."

Porter was shocked, Woodward writes, and told Trump he thought the second speech was the only good one.

"I don't want to talk to you," Trump responded. "Get away from me."

He's a deranged bully, and he loves Nazis.

Really, what more do you need to say about Trump? He wants to appear tough, and he wants his "base," which are pretty much leaning fascist at this point, to see him as infallible. Every single attempt that has been made to help him appear presidential has failed, utterly. He is a corpulent pile of shit, through and through, and there will never be a version of Trump that resembles any decent human being who has ever lived.

Oh, and when Obama was president, all of Woodward's books were "suspiciously accurate."

Ted Cruz is Spectacularly Unpopular in Texas

Ted Cruz couldn't be more unpopular in Texas if he tried, and Lord knows he has.

At this rate, putting up billboards that mock and humiliate Ted Cruz will unite the good people of Texas behind one common goal--electing Beto O'Rourke to the Senate.

Their GoFundMe was swamped with donations when they asked for cash to install this mockup billboard. There will be more of this. The momentum is shifting.

I suspect that Cruz has already been told he will be the new Attorney General when and if Trump fires Jeff Sessions. At the very least, putting Cruz in the unemployment line is of paramount concern. Democrats everywhere are working to make this happen, and bless them for their efforts.

Robocalls Target Another Democrat Running For Office

This is how we live now:

Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum on Sunday said a robocall aimed at mocking his race was "deeply regrettable" and took aim at his Republican opponent for saying Florida voters should not "monkey this up" by electing Gillum.

The 78-second prerecorded message, obtained by CNN, is narrated by a man speaking in a caricature of a black dialect with cartoonish jungle noises in the background. It ends with a disclaimer that it was paid for by The Road to Power, a white supremacist and anti-Semitic video podcast hosted by Scott Rhodes of Idaho.

The phone message went to Florida residents, but it's unclear how many received it. The Tallahassee Democrat first reported the robocall.

Asked about the robocall, Gillum, the mayor of Tallahassee, told CNN's "State of the Union, "I have to tell you I find this deeply regrettable."

Of course, there are no robocalls attacking Ron DeSantis because that's not how this works. This is why people like me have been sounding the alarm, year after year, about how the use of these racist attacks on Democrats is done by one side and one side only. This is not a "both sides do it" issue because it's pretty much Republicans using it to either attack one another or attack Democrats.

We just buried John McCain, who was attacked in South Carolina by racist robocalls nearly two decades ago. Even then, people were incredulous that it happened and that it seemed to have worked. The animals who carry out these attacks know that it is effective because, even if the robocall itself only goes out to a few hundred people, the media coverage will amplify the message.

The message that I want to amplify here is that, no matter how many times DeSantis or his fellow Republicans condemn these attacks, they are the beneficiary of the racism and the nastiness and they are certainly not going to work overtime to stop them, are they? This is what their base demands. DeSantis blew the dog whistle when Gillum won, and Republicans keep sounding the alarm in Florida--turn out GOP voters or the black man will get elected governor.

What a debacle. What a commentary on the age of Trump.

All of the decent things in America are under attack. Do you really think Ron DeSantis has any ideas, other than cut taxes, kill the planet, and run off with a bag of cash? No, he doesn't. And when someone with any talent or ability comes along, they have to be subjected to the worst kinds of attacks, the character-smearing horror show of whatever can be imagined by sick minds who ought to be driven back to the margins of our political discourse. If Trump survives to run in 2020, you can expect a lot more of this garbage.
