Yesterday Proved That Trump Can't Protect America

After years of crazy talk, yesterday's horrific attack in Manhattan proved that Trump's policies are as worthless as any of his other promises:

After a 29-year-old man drove a truck into a Manhattan crowd on Tuesday, killing eight and wounding almost a dozen in the deadliest terror attack to hit the city since 9/11, New Yorkers made it clear that they refused to be intimidated.

Families celebrated a traditional Halloween Paradehours after the attack, surrounded by police officers armed with long guns while dozens of local and federal law enforcement officers were still investigating the attack.

"This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror," New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said, "aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them."

Trump's travel ban would not have stopped this asshole, Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, because he came to this country from Uzbekistan seven years ago.

Trump's Department of Homeland Security failed to stop him from renting a truck from Home Depot, and that opens up a whole other can of worms that I'm certain we won't hear anything about. Especially since the right wing jackass who runs Home Depot has probably hidden himself away for the next month or so.

Trump's ban on transgender people serving in the military would not have stopped the attack, nor would his ban on green card holders. His policies on who can serve in the military aren't going to do a thing to protect this country; in fact, he may end up radicalizing more people and causing more individuals to see this country as a betrayal to the promise of accepting immigrants and refugees.

Trump's tax plans would starve local governments of the revenue they need to pay for first responders because, in places like New York City, the Federal Government should help foot the bill to provide the necessary infrastructure to deal with mass casualty attacks. New York City has already been on the hook for protecting Trump Tower. How much of that money could have been spent providing more first responders? Millionaires would get tax cuts and the people who actually do the work would end up with pennies on the dollar, if that.

And Trump's annoying habit of overreacting to every terrorist incident was undercut by the strength and resolve of New Yorkers who refused to have their Halloween ruined.

Do you know what really did help? It was the fact that the terrorist didn't actually have three machine guns at his disposal. New York City's gun laws may have actually saved lives yesterday if it is proven that Saipov was denied ownership of more lethal firearms. That, of course, has nothing to do with Trump and everything to do with common sense governance.

And do you know what we should not lose sight of? New York City has some of the most experienced first responders in America. They deserve all the credit they receive. It takes decades to build up the skills and the professionalism needed to deal with incidents like this. The Federal Government should fund more training, more equipment, and more opportunities for Fire, Police, Ambulance, and Emergency Room services to train together to deal with mass casualty events. Instead of sending them tanks and grenade launchers, why not send them the resources they need to prepare for any eventuality?

It will never dawn on Trump supporters that they've been had. The brain does not work that way. They will continue to live in denial while, all around them, every one of his promises evaporates into dust.
