President Trump's decision to call any NFL player who kneels during the National Anthem a "son of a bitch" is an unforced error. His remarks do nothing to improve this country. The energy he expends doing this does not serve to advance civilization in the right direction.
Trump says something so offensive, so loutish and uncouth that it hardly registers with the American people that a normal president from either of the two parties would never talk like this in a prepared speech (off the cuff in private, on a hot mic or standing in front of a urinal, okay). The profane, the racist, and the inappropriate have become normal dialogue. Years from now, children repeating Trump's words will serve as a caution to everyone that maybe they should actually fucking vote in elections from now on.
This was a deliberately injurious thing that caused tremendous embarrassment to decent people. LeBron James called him a bum because Trump committed another unforced error and attacked Steph Curry. Do you know how brave you have to be, at this point, to call Trump a derogatory name in public even if you have millions of followers on Twitter? The threats against James alone right now are enough to give people pause because a feral mob is engaged in preserving the Trump Regime. They don't care about governing. They don't care about results. They care about attacking any enemy of Trump with as much vitriol as possible.
This sort of thing does not galvanize anyone to create jobs, solve the health care problems we face, or make us safer. Millions of Americans are suffering the effects of terrible storms, wildfires, and crushing poverty. How would you like to be one of them? Chances are, one of us is going to be next.
Trump running his mouth about anything other than the fiasco of his presidency is a reason to remember to keep our eye on the ball. When he speaks, it is never truthful. It does strike me as being a calculated move, to attack some pro football players or the Golden State Warriors out of the blue and create a distraction from the Robert Mueller investigation. It gives people something to talk about while his cabinet secretaries ravage the treasury and steal whatever they can get their hands on. And it is proof that General Kelly should resign because he certainly can't contain the Trumpisms, can he?
The anthem protests, which began when Colin Kaepernick kneeled during the national anthem last fall, seemed to come up randomly while Trump was rallying an Alabama crowd to support Luther Strange in a primary election.
Trump said NFL owners should get rid of players like that.
"Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, out, he's fired. He's fired,'" Trump said. "You know, some owner is going to do that. He's going to say, 'That guy that disrespects our flag, he's fired.' And that owner, they don't know it [but] they'll be the most popular person in this country."
The president followed up on Twitter Saturday afternoon.
"If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL,or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect. ... our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem. If not, YOU'RE FIRED. Find something else to do!"
Well, that's all well and good, but what about Secretary Tom Price and his new-found problems with the Inspector General of his agency? What about the other idiots who can't remember meeting after meeting with Russian intelligence agents or disclosing tens of millions of dollars in personal assets that were probably kept off the last Federal Income Tax Return. These jackanapes can't fill out forms to save their lives. That's a hell of a judicial system we have there, I gotta tell you, because anywhere else, they entirety of Trump's crack team of officials would be under the jail in a functioning democracy.
And, by the way, where are your tax returns, Mr. President? If you think Russia is a hoax, prove it and show the American people you haven't been taking filthy Russian money. I don't want to hear him call it a hoax until he has proof that no Russian cash ended up in his pants at the end of the day.
The gall of these assholes. Someone needs to remind Trump that talking about his love of white supremacy doesn't really help people forget he's a crooked bastard with a propensity for assaulting women. Does he even have advisors anymore? You'd think he would talk about anything other than all of his weaknesses any chance he gets.
Hey, Republicans. You control the Legislative branch of the Federal Government. You can impeach Trump any time you like. The fact that you haven't means you're okay with this trash stinking up the place. This is all on you, forever and ever, Amen.
