Notre Dame Turns on the President

If the University of Notre Dame isn't on your side, you can expect to reap the whirlwind:

Officials at American universities have responded to President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration -- speaking out against it or advising university members who are from the seven countries affected by the action not to travel outside the United States.
The president of the University of Notre Dame, Father John I. Jenkins, slammed the order, calling its character “sweeping, indiscriminate and abrupt.”
“If it stands, it will over time diminish the scope and strength of the educational and research efforts of American universities, which have been the source not only of intellectual discovery but of economic innovation for the United States and international understanding for our world; and, above all, it will demean our nation,” Jenkins said in a statement.

How powerful are America's elite universities? Powerful enough to force the Trump Regime to back down? Well, we already know they don't care about the rule of law. But if they've lost a significant part of their base--conservative Catholics and elite institutions that are friendly towards restrictions on abortion--then there can't be a way to resolve this that doesn't take into account the effect the travel ban is having on institutions of higher learning.

Did an American Soldier Die For No Reason?

Was the raid in Yemen timed to give the Trump Regime some cover on the Executive Order banning travel from seven Middle Eastern countries?

The U.S. military said Sunday that one service member was killed and three others wounded in a raid in Yemen targeting its local al Qaeda branch, marking the first-known combat death of a U.S. soldier under President Donald Trump’s new administration.
A U.S. military officer told CBS News the raid was approved by Mr. Trump.
U.S. Central Command said in a statement that a fourth service member was injured in a “hard landing” in a nearby location. The aircraft - an MV-22 Osprey, CBS News correspondent David Martin confirms - was unable to fly afterward and was “intentionally destroyed.”
The Central Command statement said 14 militants from al Qaeda’s branch in Yemen, formally known as “al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula,” were killed in the assault and that U.S. service members taking part in the raid captured “information that will likely provide insight into the planning of future terror plots.”

Yemen was one of the countries on that list, and the whole policy has gone up in flames because of protests and legal challenges. You have green card holders in limbo, politicians intervening to get people released from detention, and the Department of Homeland Security basically ignoring the legal sanctions against the policy. Now we have an anti-terror raid that came about on Trump's explicit orders.

Was this a coincidence or was it meant to show that Trump has proof that everyone traveling from Yemen is a bloodthirsty terrorist? And who really ordered the raid? Was this in the works before the policy turned out to be so divisive and horrible?

Republicans love creating more veterans without bothering to take care of them when the fighting ends, and they have never hesitated to use the military as a prop. Is this something else we can look forward to?

Nobody Thought This Through

As we find out more about the Trump Regime's immigration ban, I think it's fair to say that this policy has no basis in common sense or decency:

Citizens of the seven countries identified by President Donald Trump for a 90-day visa ban who hold dual nationality also will be barred from entering the United States, the U.S. State Department said in a statement Saturday.
In a statement that the State Department is due to release, which was reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, the 90-day visa moratorium extends beyond just citizens of Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Libya and Yemen.
It also applies to people who originally hail from those countries but are traveling on a passport issued by any other nation, the statement notes. That means Iraqis seeking to enter the U.S. on a British passport, for instance, will be barred, according to a U.S. official. British citizens don’t normally require a visa to enter the U.S.
“Travelers who have nationality or dual nationality of one of these countries will not be permitted for 90 days to enter the United States or be issued an immigrant or nonimmigrant visa,” the statement said. “Those nationals or dual nationals holding valid immigrant or nonimmigrant visas will not be permitted to enter the United States during this period.  Visa interviews will generally not be scheduled for nationals of these countries during this period.”

Chances are pretty good that anyone with a dual citizenship passport is involved in business, Information Technology, or a whole host of other kinds of professional work. I would think the number of people in the medical field who travel on dual passports--born in the Middle East, educated in Europe or the United States--is fairly large. Who, in their right mind, would implement such a policy? Oh, that's right. White nationalists pandering to their base.

We already know that this is affecting the Information Technology industry, and that's where I've spent the last decade and a half working. This will affect people who don't deserve to be treated in this manner. It will split families and cause massive embarrassment on top of heartache and misery. It's as un-American as hell and I can't believe we're at a point where this is the policy of our government.

This is the same unadulterated bullshit that was being spewed during the campaign and it is fair to say that the racists who implemented this policy are supported by the racist trash that voted them into office. I don't have a lot of compassion or sympathy for misguided shitheads in the Midwest who marinate themselves in Fox News and cheap crime shows. A basic knowledge of what America is about should have been enough for them to realize that what they were voting for is wrong.

But here we are. Thousands of people are now stuck in limbo, and nobody knows what will happen next. Congress must intervene and clarify who actually runs immigration policy. If not, we are in a horrible place with no chance of things getting better until the next election.

This is what happens when cheap, small people start making the rules. That's how we look to the rest of the world because of this--cheap and small, racist and incompetent.

Some other articles cover the impact:

Small Men Do Small Things

The idea of America died today:

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday that indefinitely suspends admissions for Syrian refugees and limits the flow of other refugees into the United States by instituting what the President has called "extreme vetting" of immigrants.
Titled "Protection Of The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into The United States," the executive order would start to make good on Trump's promise to tighten borders and halt certain refugees from entering the United States.
The text of the order -- in a break from drafts that had been circulating earlier this week -- drops a longtime Trump campaign pledge to establish safe zones in Syria to give Syrian nationals displaced by the ongoing civil war in the country a place to relocate.
The order bars all persons from certain terror-prone countries from entering the United States for 90 days and suspends the US Refugee Admissions Program for 120 days until it is reinstated "only for nationals of countries for whom" members of Trump's Cabinet deem can be properly vetted.

Bear in mind--this is an executive order. It has only as much teeth to it as Congress allows. Having seen our gutless Legislative branch in action, that doesn't say much. Maybe a patriot or two will point out how antithetical to the whole idea of Ronald Reagan this is. Maybe a few people will find some decency in themselves--don't stay up late waiting for that to happen. What was it that made all this possible?

It wasn't so much Trump as it was the ugly racism that propelled him into the White House. It wasn't so much the horrible human beings surrounding him as it was the indifference that allowed so many people not to vote. It wasn't the Russians so much as it was the people who were too "pure" to vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton and instead threw their votes away on hopeless candidates who could not win.

This used to be a nation that welcomed a few people, and excluded too many. The history of the 19th Century in this country is one of bigotry and racism, and of laws that turned people away. We were horrible to the Chinese, we were horrible to Eastern Europeans, and we were horrible to Jews and anyone suffering around the world. We examined ourselves and made changes, and we now judge the decisions made then as abhorrent. We were on a path towards better days, and then we decided, for whatever reason, to let a very small man have just enough power so that he could stab the very idea of America in the heart so that he could watch it bleed out on the ground for pure amusement.

The 20th Century was about finding a better version of America to try to put into practice. We failed more times than we succeeded. By the 1990s, I figured a lot of this was behind us. I was wrong as were many others. Everything has gone off the rails here in the 21st Century in a way that is shocking to witness. The racism that Trump used to win the presidency has not been reckoned with. Far too many small, incompetent men have been given far too much power. It would probably be a damned good idea to find someone who can lead us out of the terrible times we're in and hope for the best.

The suffering of others is just blood sport and pure amusement for the likes of the Trump regime. These are puffed up madmen who wish they could display their medals and step over the bodies of anyone who opposes them. They are not an administration--that would mean legitimacy, knowledge of customs and practices, and concern for the well being of the whole nation. Trump is in power to make a minority of old white people feel better about the racism they were harboring in silence for many years.

The Trump people have been made normal by the media, which is a farce unto itself. Such a beautiful family couldn't possibly be evil. Remember, they all believe in eugenics.

Is Congress going to get involved? I thought Congress was responsible for setting immigration policy. I can see it now--Paul Ryan will say something serious and mopey-faced and then do nothing because he's getting the chance to run a knife through Medicare. Courage is an endangered species among Republicans in the House.

The judgement of history is going to be severe. We have lost our way. Good people are going to have to work very, very hard to get us back on track. I'm certain we will find our way and, once again, banish these terrible people to the margins of polite society. It is not all doom and gloom, but it certainly isn't cause for celebration. The implications of turning our backs on being Americans and shutting out people who need our help will be far reaching. In three generations, I hope we can undo most of the damage being done as we speak. I doubt we will.

Where were you when the idea of America was written away by an executive order full of ignorance and foolishness? Where we you when the small men used the canard of "radical Islamic terrorism" to rip out the heart of liberty and use it for a prop on TV? What was keeping you amused while they ruined the country?

That's Not How Any of This Works

President* Trump has no idea how civilian control of the military works:

President Donald Trump said Friday he will allow his Defense Secretary James Mattis to "override" him on torture, an issue on which the two men disagree.
"I don't necessarily agree, but I would tell you that he would override because I am giving him that power," Trump said Friday during a joint news conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May. "I am going to rely on him."
Trump has in the past suggested that he would defer to Mattis, who is firmly opposed to reinstating torture, on the issue, but he appeared to go further Friday in closing the door on the issue.

The president cannot just "give" away his power to tell the Secretary of Defense what to do. In effect, we now have a constitutional crisis because the chain of command has been upended, and the Secretary of Defense is now as powerful as the President of the United States. By saying that he "gives" Mattis the power to override him, he is delegating authority outside of the constitution. This is not only incorrect and wrong but sets a dangerous precedent. There is a chain of accountability, and Trump appears to not understand that. When he allows someone he outranks to have power over him, he is woefully ignorant of American history, culture, tradition, and law. The immediate response of Secretary Mattis should have been,  "no sir. You are in charge of policy. I will execute your policies but I will not override you."

This is batshit crazy. By definition, no one is in charge. If Mattis can override the president on this one issue, why not put him back in uniform and give him a fifth star? Five stars for everyone. If we're not going to respect the chain of command, let's finish off the idea that there is a commander in chief in the first place.

In other words, you have to fuck up really, really bad on purpose for this to even be a thing we are discussing. If we were talking about a Democratic president telling a member of the cabinet to go ahead and bail him out here and override his orders, there would already be impeachment proceedings in the House. The abdication of accountability and responsibility is wrong.

In a simpler time, someone like George Marshall would step in and quietly say that this is not how things work, Mr. President. Those days are gone.

The Baby Box

I don't think there's anyone out there who couldn't use a break from horrible news. And that's what this is--a post about some good news, for a change.

Finland has found an unusual solution to a leading cause of infant death — baby boxes. Now the state of New Jersey and hospitals across the United States are adopting Finland's example.
Since 1949, the Finnish government has offered every new mother a box including a mattress, fitted sheet, blanket, sleeping sack, snowsuit, mittens, booties, hooded suits, overalls, socks, knitted hat, balaclava face mask, rompers, leggings, onesies, bath towels, nail scissors, hairbrush, toothbrush, cloth diapers, picture books, bra pads, and even condoms.

This is the perfect marriage of technology and a cost-effective measure designed to save lives. And while I fully realize that Scandanavian socialism is unacceptable to Americans unless they think they've thought of it first, this is really the kind of quality of life care and support that should be universal.

The infant mortality rate in America is already high, and if this helps, then all the better. And the reason why this is important is because of how inexpensive it is to give one of these boxes to every mother who leaves a hospital. It's not the perfect solution, but it's something that can and should be done at every level in order to help new mothers.

What I fear is that this kind of common sense will be lost in the years ahead. Anyone who says it's too expensive is a ghoul. It's not. This is something we should do. And if you want to charge women who make over $100,000 a year twenty bucks for this thing, okay. But it's a solution that should continue to be studied and implemented.

The Fix is In

This is how they are going to roll out the removal of sanctions against Russia:

President Donald Trump is considering lifting the sanctions imposed against Russia by former President Barack Obama for that nation’s alleged hacking of the 2016 presidential election, at least according to a Friday morning appearance on “Fox & Friends” by Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway.

If you watch this segment, and many won't have the stomach for it, Conway marries the removal of sanctions to fighting ISIS. This is their marketing plan--they want to sell it by associating something we had to do--sanctions--with something that the rabid base of the Republican Party thinks we have to do--namely, removing the sanctions so Russia will help us destroy ISIS.

This is why Rex Tillerson is the Secretary of State--we're going to do deals with Russia over oil. Billions are at stake. Greed has replaced common sense. And when oil men run things, hold on to your wallet. Gas prices are about to jump, which will save Russia from economic collapse. This is all being engineered before our eyes. Conway is the salesperson and America is still full of suckers.

The Democratic Party's answer should be this--we don't need Russia to help us destroy ISIS because we're more than capable, as the world's only superpower, of doing it ourselves. Russia has been helping ISIS, and everyone knows that it cannot be trusted as any kind of an ally. Any American strategic position that relies on Russia is proof that we are owned by the Kremlin. Any friendly ties between Trump and Russia should be used as proof that the fix is in, and we have been compromised.

Madeleine Albright Shows Us How to Resist

If you're going to resist the crazy new laws and regulations that are coming at us in the weeks ahead, why not follow former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's lead?

In a tweet posted at 10:18 a.m. Wednesday, Albright wrote, “I was raised Catholic, became Episcopalian & found out later my family was Jewish. I stand ready to register as Muslim in #solidarity.” As of this article’s publication, the tweet has more than 46,000 likes and more than 20,000 retweets.
Within moments of the tweet mentioned above, Albright further emphasized her message by tweeting a photo of the statue of liberty, emblazoned with the words, “ “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

THAT'S how you resist. That's how you demonstrate that these horrible policies are destined to fail. And that's why we need to follow Albright's lead. Yeah, it's very symbolic, and it's not going to change the minds of people gripped by hate, but it does inspire people to do something rather than roll over and take it.

Nobody has ever been able to explain what is "christian" or "American" about excluding people from this country based on their religion.

Insecure Man Wastes Taxpayer Dollars Complaining

It's day six of the trainwreck presidency, and this is how bad the dumpster fire has gotten:

According to a new report in The Washington Post, President Donald Trump personally called acting National Park Service director Michael T. Reynolds the morning after his inauguration and ordered him to produce photos of the crowd on the Washington Mall that would serve to counter reports that fewer people had attended than four and eight years earlier. According to “three individuals who have knowledge of the conversation,” the Post reported that Trump “also expressed anger over a retweet sent from the agency’s account, in which side-by-side photographs showed far fewer people at his swearing-in than had shown up to see Barack Obama’s inaugural in 2009.” That same morning, White House press secretary Sean Spicer castigated the media for what the administration viewed as false reports about the size of Trump’s crowd. “This was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration. Period. Both in person and around the globe,” he said, offering no evidence to back up that demonstrably false claim.

If the facts don't match reality, there's always precious time during the day when the president of the United States can bitch at bureaucrats and make insane demands.

Honestly, if this doesn't trigger the 25th Amendment, nothing will. The man is looney tunes.

So, just to catch everyone up to speed--Trump has all day to waste on this nonsense. He's taken a one day story and turned it into the defining issue of his presidency. The Executive Branch is now leaking so badly they couldn't keep anything secret if they wanted to. Honestly, the only reason why we know this is because someone is convinced that it will do some good to put this out there, but they're wrong. This is not going to cause forty or fifty Republican senators to come to together and initiate a review of the president's mental fitness for office. We are not all of a sudden going to get good government, brave leaders, or common decency no matter what anyone wishes. And it's a good thing he doesn't have a habit of skipping national security briefings or delegating evil to people. Besides, if there's anything he needs to know, the goddamned Russians can just send him an E-mail, right?

You Get to Pay for Trump's Wall

The insanity continues. In order to pay for a wall between the U.S. and Mexico that we don't need, American consumers will have to pay more for consumer goods that come from Mexico.

Congratulations, Trump voters. You now have a massive tax increase, one that will primarily impact low income people, to go along with the loss of your health care. Get ready to pay more for gasoline, too, because that's coming right after we start an unnecessary trade war with Europe and Asia. The economic impact of all this will kill jobs, send prices soaring, and cripple the economy.

Sean Spicer Can't Stop Tweeting His Own Passwords

The upside of being a member of the Trump White House is that, when hackers steal all your stuff, you can ask the FBI to help you get it back.

This story is from Newsweek:

Senior Trump administration staffers including Kellyanne Conway, Jared Kushner, Sean Spicer and Steve Bannon have active accounts on a Republican National Committee email system, Newsweek has learned.
The system ( is the same one the George W. Bush administration was accused of using to evade transparency rules after claiming to have “lost” 22 million emails.
Related: The George W. Bush White House ‘Lost’ 22 Million Emails
Making use of separate political email accounts at the White House is not illegal. In fact, they serve a purpose by allowing staff to divide political conversations (say, arranging for the president to support a congressional re-election campaign) from actual White House work. Commingling politics and state business violates the Hatch Act, which restricts many executive branch employees from engaging in political activity on government time.
Try Newsweek for only $1.25 per week
But after then-candidate Donald Trump and the Republicans repeatedly called for “locking up” Hillary Clinton for handling government work with a private server while secretary of state, the new White House staff risks repeating the same mistake that dogged the Democrat’s presidential campaign. They also face a security challenge: The RNC email system, according to U.S. intelligence, was hacked during the 2016 race. “They better be careful after making such a huge ruckus over the private email over at the State Department,” says former Bush administration lawyer Richard Painter.
(The White House has not responded to queries about the system. Newsweek will update if and when it does.)
It’s not clear whether or how Trump staffers are using the RNC email addresses. If they are using them, they are subject to the “Disclosure Requirement For Official Business Conducted Using Electronic Messaging Accounts," a law, 44 U.S.C. 2209, that went into effect in 2014. If White House staffers have already used the RNC emails system for White House work, they must copy or forward those communications into the government system within 20 days.

I got nothin'.

Cashing in on the Presidency

This is another reason why the sitting president should be considered an amoral grifter and the head of a vast criminal enterprise:

Mar-a-Lago, the Palm Beach resort owned by the Trump Organization, doubled its initiation fee to $200,000 following the election of Donald Trump as president.
People close to the Florida resort said the increase took effect Jan. 1. The resort had been considering an increase for some time, said those people, who declined to provide their names because they were not authorized to speak on behalf of the company.
But the timing is likely to add to criticism that the Trump Organization is trying to benefit from the president's election.
Either way, a membership at Mar-a-Lago now includes a chance to mingle with the 45th president. Trump plans to use the resort as his occasional "Winter White House." He has visited twice since his election — first for Thanksgiving and then over Christmas and New Year holidays.

The price of access to the president doubled overnight. No conflict of interest here. And, of course, there are no tax records which would show whether or not the president is receiving money from foreign governments. Will we get to see the member list of Mar-a-Lago? What if there are unsavory characters on that list? Heavens.

And, as if it needs to be said, if Hillary had won the election, and if the Clinton Foundation had doubled the price of access to the president or her husband, the outrage would be permanent. There isn't anything that Trump can't do. He can fleece millions out of people and no one bats an eye.

Craving Normalcy

It would be foolish for Democrats to work with President Trump, and Jonathan Chait lays out a pretty good case for not giving in to his infrastructure demands. I agree with what he's saying since there's no reason for anyone to believe anything Trump says:

In theory, it might make sense for the public to conclude that Democrats are doing a better job than Republicans of helping Trump govern. In reality, that is not how they think at all. If Trump passes a bipartisan bill, it will make Trump more popular, and thus Trump’s party more popular. Democrats’ success in the next two elections will be determined by Trump’s approval ratings. The lower his ratings, the better Democrats will do. Voters are not going to reward Democrats for proving they can get stuff done with Trump.
To be sure, it would be awkward for Democrats to openly oppose infrastructure spending after having supported it for years before. The easy way out for them would be to follow Arizona Representative Ruben Gallego’s proposal to deny support for any infrastructure bill unless Trump releases his taxes to prove he would not personally benefit. Trump might get away with unprecedented corruption in office, but why not make Republicans in Congress bear the sole responsibility for this destruction of long-standing norms? Why should Democrats participate?
But Senate Democrats have not imposed any such condition on their infrastructure plan. Matt House, a spokesman for Schumer, told me, “Our position is that the president should make his returns public, that he shouldn’t earn any money off of this bill, and that he should support the legislation.” In other words, Democrats will not require any mechanism to ensure that Trump and his family do not profit off the bill as a condition for supporting a bill. That means they are willing not only to give Trump the political win he craves but also to tacitly cooperate with his obliteration of long-standing norms.

At some point, the American people will crave normalcy and demand it. When is enough enough? How much jackassery can people take?

I think the demand for competence is very high right now and we should have left the campaign stage behind months ago. We're in the governing phase, but Trump wants to bask in adulation and say crazy things over Twitter in order to get a jolt of energy from his supporters. This need for constant affirmation has derailed the first week of his presidency. This is not how you govern, and the campaign ended a long time ago.

I don't hear much talk about this, but, when it suits him, Trump will abandon the Republicans and embrace the Democrats if he thinks it will give him what he wants. He is utterly without principle and surrounded by unqualified yes-men. The Democrats could encourage this, and trick Trump into turning his back on the GOP, but what would that give anyone? A reason to impeach him and remove him from office? A way out of this mess?

The United States needs a normal, functioning government that does not terrify its own allies. It needs a return to normal business. When everything is unsettled, the American people tend to start paying attention to what politicians are doing, and that never works out well for incumbents. And I do think that the notion that the president is unfit for office and may trigger a 25th Amendment showdown is a real possibility.

Tuesday, January 24, 2017

You can mark down today's date. It's January 24, 2017, sometime in the afternoon depending on where you are.

This is the moment we've all been waiting for.

This is the moment when we've been given all the proof we need that the President of the United States is mentally unfit to discharge the duties of his office.

President Donald Trump believes millions of votes were cast illegally in last year's election, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Tuesday, but he wouldn't provide any concrete evidence for the claim, which has long been debunked.
"The President does believe that, I think he's stated that before, and stated his concern of voter fraud and people voting illegally during the campaign and continues to maintain that belief based on studies and evidence people have brought to him," Spicer said.
Pressed for what evidence exists, Spicer would say only that Trump "has believed that for a while based on studies and information he has."

You see, today he sent the White House Press Secretary into the White House Press Room to lie to the White House Press Corps about something that can easily be verified. He has no proof, no evidence, nothing. He does have his orders. And the sitting president ordered him to lie to the American people about the subversion of American democracy because he is insecure about having lost the popular vote. In an election held last November. That he won under the rules of the Electoral College.

Did "3-5 million illegal immigrants vote in the last election?"

We know this is a fact. There were a handful of people who were caught voting illegally and one of them was a Trump voter. There is no such thing as voter fraud. It is statistically minuscule when it happens, if it happens at all. It is just a right wing talking point designed to help Republicans disenfranchise American citizens. We're not in the midst of a campaign where serial lying is tolerated. We are in governance mode. There is a huge difference between running for the job, being the POTUS-elect, and then taking the oath of office. After you take the oath of office, everything changes in an instant.

The Trump Regime has not gotten the memo. The man is crazy. He can't let it go. It's a nothing burger of a story. It's not even relevant anymore.

If this insistence, which is now in its fourth day, on the existence of something that doesn't actually exist, doesn't wake someone up, what the hell will? If this continues, someone is going to have to invoke the 25th Amendment to the constitution. It should be mandatory for the president's physician to examine him and report back to the bipartisan leadership of Congress. I mean, they should put him in an ambulance and head on down to Bethesda immediately.

I'm not a betting man, but I seriously doubt this can continue for much longer. There's something seriously wrong here and it is not going to sort itself out. Where can we find one decent man in Washington with the stones to do this?

I will bet you this, though--no one will say anything or do anything until Americans are actually physically harmed. What a tragedy.

UPDATE: I see I'm not the only person who agrees with this.

She Was Being Politically Incorrect

The story of Katie Rich is one that people keep using to confirm their own bias against whatever it is they don't like.

One, she told a joke. She writes jokes. Some people didn't like this one. It's not the end of the world. And, oh by the way, Planned Parenthood came under attack today.

Two, the person she joked about was the son of a billionaire who just got elected President of the United States. She is not exactly punching down here, given that the same POTUS has a long, proud history of mocking people for their appearance. When was the last time you gave to Planned Parenthood? They're gonna need your help.

Three. Her joke was politically incorrect. The very same people defending "Barron" and calling for her to be fired are alt-right trolls who have been telling us for years that being politically incorrect should not subject you to penalties in the marketplace of ideas. Every time one of them gets fired for using the "N" word, it's a tragedy. Every time a liberal does something remotely politically incorrect, it becomes weapons-grade plutonium. But Planned Parenthood, whoa, you know. Things are happening there. Were you distracted?

You see, these alt-right trolls are nihilists who don't believe in anything except manipulation. Liberals are very, very squeamish about people being mocked or made fun of, so the people most outraged by what Rich did are the hypocrites here. It's funny how no one brings up the horrible jokes prominent Republicans who still have jobs in the broadcasting business made about Chelsea Clinton. It's funny how no one brings up the horrible things said about the Obama daughters. Memory hole! Whoosh!

Rich is probably going to be fired because her parent company just hired Megyn Kelly and Greta Van Susteren away from Fox News so that they can get Republicans to like them. She took the joke down and appears to be ready to pay a penalty here. That's because she's a decent human being. Her detractors have a long, proud history of populating the world with hate, racism, and misogyny. And they get away with it because everyone is ready to denounce a liberal leaning joke teller for not writing the most sensitive joke. And, I'll be damned, no one's talking about Planned Parenthood, so what do I know?

Have you taken your eye off the ball yet? While you were mad at a Saturday Night Live joke teller, Planned Parenthood was ordered to be defunded by Executive Order. Which used to be Tyranny! until it was done by a Republican. As a matter of fact, every time President Obama issued an Executive Order, it was the END of DEMOCRACY. Now, when Trump does it, it's because the media makes him sad because they keep reporting the fact that people don't want him to do the shit three million fewer people voted him into office to do.

See number one. And you're going to feel pretty bad when the kid does come unglued in public, aren't you? His mother seems to be miserable, but who the hell knows? Not the father, because he's mad the media keeps reporting facts that humiliate him and his friends, who are pillaging the treasury, taking away the rights of good people, and are hell-bent on tanking the world economy.

Priorities, people. Priorities.

No Dynasties, Please. We're Americans

This is an example of the high art of concern trolling:

After three years as US ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy is coming home to New York and has big plans: a political run and penning a memoir, Kennedy insiders tell The Post.
“Caroline had a successful ambassadorial run in Japan and feels really very confident about putting her hat in the ring for a New York congressional or Senate seat, with even possibly bigger political objectives down the road,” said a source familiar with Kennedy’s plans.
And another close source revealed, “Caroline is seen in some quarters as the next Hillary Clinton. She has the Kennedy name but no Clinton baggage.”
The sources maintain that Kennedy’s “dream” is to become a US senator from New York, following in the footsteps of her late uncle, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy.

I think that the best thing that the Democratic Party can do is to stop nominating people because of who they are related to instead of what they've actually fucking done. I like Caroline Kennedy, I'm glad she was successful as the Ambassador to Japan, but that hardly qualifies her for a Senate seat or the presidency. It barely qualifies her for Congress.

What I really don't want to see are negative attacks on Kennedy, however. I want to see better Democrats run for office. I want there to be a massive recruiting effort that is designed to start winning back state legislatures and seats in Congress. Kennedy comes from the Northeast, which is full of people who are more than qualified for the Senate and the presidency. When you stack her up against many of those currently serving lawmakers, her resume is just too thin.

No dynasties. No more giving it to people because of their last name or who their father was or who they married. Enough of that. We need better candidates, and we need people who are willing to not only join the Democratic Party but to pay their dues. Allowing celebrity to leapfrog competence is a huge mistake. We need people who know shit and want to get shit done rather than be someone famous. We don't need anymore people who want to ride their familial associations into lifelong job security.

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Lie to Us

I think it's pretty obvious that Al Franken's books about the right wing lying machine were prophetic and accurate in ways we couldn't have known ten or twenty years ago. And I know it's highly unlikely that we will see updated versions for the current situation in which we find ourselves.

If you've been paying attention up til today, you already know that the right wing has weaponized lying and is using it to distract people from the radical redistribution upwards of income and property. That's the marketing plan--lie about what's happening, and repeat that lie until people are too weary to fight back against it. They are counting on you to go home, sit on your hands, and be distracted by the popular culture.

The Women's March reminded us of something--the lying may get old, and we may have seen this playbook before, but it's not going to break us down. It is not going to stop us from fighting back. And if we mock them when they lie, and keep doing it, day after day, we are fighting back against the normalization of Trump and the weaponization of lying in our politics. Day in, and day out, Hillary told people the truth, and the media failed to tell the American people that she was being truthful when she talked about jobs, the economy, and health care. The media has failed to identify lying when it happens in real time, but there are signs that they are getting better. You have to praise Chuck Todd for standing up to Kellyanne Conway's ridiculous "alternative facts" spin. But this has to improve, and it has to expand to having people stand in front of the President himself and tell him he's a liar when he lies.

The media are still a massive failure, and Franken was right.

Fox News Dismissed the Women's March

Why would Fox News even bother to cover the fact that yesterday showed us the largest protest in the history of the United States of America? They're on the wrong side of history:

Even while hundreds of thousands of people were peaceably marching in Washington, D.C. and other cities, Fox pretended that nothing special was going on. We were Instead treated to a history lesson about the National Prayer Service; discussions of Trump’s executive actions; endless recaps of the inauguration and subsequent festivities, and breathless reports about James Mattis being sworn in as Secretary of Defense. It was enough to make you cry, “Fake news!”
And when Fox did finally report on the historic march, it was often in a smug, dismissive tone. Bill Hemmer rhetorically asked, “What does it say about Democrats, about liberals, that they refuse to accept reality?” His co-host, Shannon Bream, cast doubt on the accuracy of the numbers of protestors being reported by the media, which was understandable if she was only watching her own network’s coverage.

It has to be a scary thing, winning everything and knowing it doesn't mean anything if people aren't complacent and accepting of the victory. The worst thing in the world is to be in power, in the majority, and know everyone is energized and engaged and paying attention to every mistake being made. Republicans wanted all three branches of government and a distracted, disengaged populace. They'll do horrible shit and probably get away with most of it, but they won't be able to do everything because too many people are too pissed off to let them get away with it.

January 21, 2017 was proof people aren't going to roll over ever again.

Trump's Mouthpiece is Delusional and Humorless

I'm going to include the video of the press briefing given today by White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer. It is rife with humorlessness, outrage, and hyperbole.

It is now the duty of Americans everywhere to mock these people. The statements made by Trump and his underlings should be endlessly mocked for their inability to connect with reality. Every lie, every outrage, everything they say should be met with howls of laughter.

Watch how angry Spicer gets. He looks like he's going to have a stroke. Over what? The loss of lives, the failure of a military mission, the collapse of something important? No. He's mad because people are laughing at the boss.

So, umm--keep laughing. Drive these jackasses crazy.

It's not enough to say "they lie." They don't have an acquaintance with the truth. They won't let the truth in the room. They suspect they know what the truth is, but they're in denial.

Informal estimates said that about 250,000 people attended the inaugural. That's a paltry number compared to the last few, and an embarrassing spectacle for a president who lost the popular vote by millions and relied on racism, bigotry, and xenophobia to win. Earlier today I showed you how the people who attended were overwhelmingly white, old, and grim faced. The Trump Regime is reacting to photos--real photos--taken by real people. Evidence, in other words, of what the truth looks like.

We need satire and humor more than ever. These things are like kryptonite to autocrats. Trump himself cannot stand being made fun of. The need to make fun of this man is your patriotic duty.

It Took This Horrific Moment of Darkness to Wake Us the Fuck Up

Madonna has a big bag of fucks, and she turned it upside down and emptied it all over Donald Trump today. Hers was one of many powerful speeches given at the Women's March, and her words are going to be prophetic. Anyone who thinks this doesn't matter is wrong on so many levels.

This is powerful and relevant political rhetoric, and it arrives at just the right time from just the right A-list musical legend. I would like to hear more of this from the staid and polite males that make up the other side of the ledger.

Faces in the Crowd at the Inauguration

You can play around with this yourself, and you can see if you reach the same conclusion.

This image is from the Gigapixel shot at the inauguration yesterday. It was taken while Trump was speaking to this very crowd. Here you have an overwhelmingly white audience that is absolutely miserable. There is a noticeable dearth of smiling faces. Many of them are elderly and stone faced, and are really trying to avoid enjoying anything. The weather, of course, may have had something to do with it, but I don't think so.

I believe the photo captures the mood of the Trump supporters and voters. I believe that they know other people are about to begin suffering and they are resolute in seeing that through.

Here's an even better one, taken from the VIP section up over the left shoulder of Trump while he's giving his "American Carnage" address.

The Women's March

Today is the first day of the resistance, and what a glorious thing it is to be on the right side of history. This is a shot via Balloon Juice of what's happening in Washington D.C. right now.

And that's the only word I can come up with. Glorious. A vast sea of people have descended on the city to make sure that the issues of women are not lost on a new presidential regime* and that the world knows America believes in decency.

*henceforth, there is no "administration" in Washington D.C. It is the very definition of a "regime." This election was stolen, these people have stolen it, and they have imposed a militaristic regime upon the American people.

The First Scandal of the New Regime

That didn't take long--less than 24 hours, in fact:

The White House edited First Lady Melania Trump's biography on Friday "out of an abundance of caution" that a reference to her clothing line on QVC could be seen as an endorsement, a spokesperson for Trump told CNN.
The page lists information about Trump's life, including her modeling career and philanthropy. Earlier in the day, however, her QVC jewelry collection was mentioned.
"In April 2010, Melania Trump launched her own jewelry collection, 'Melania™ Timepieces & Jewelry,' on QVC," the biography said.
QVC no longer sells jewelry under the Trump brand and the biography did not link to QVC. A spokeswoman for the company, Rebecca Blank, told CNN Friday that QVC does "not have an active relationship with the brand."
The Trump spokesperson said the reference to Trump's "entrepreneurial success" was based on fact and not an endorsement and noted that it was not available for sale.

Now, if this had been a Democratic administration, and if they had been forced to remove such a reference from Michelle Obama's bio, well. There would already be hearings scheduled on the Hill. That little asshole from Utah, Jason Chaffetz, would already be on television howling about it.

The reflexive action of the Trump people is to commercialize and steal everything that isn't nailed down. That effort is well underway.

The Grift Goes On

The Trump Regime is now, officially, a grift.

When you now land on, the first thing they want you to do is put in your e-mail address and your ZIP code so they can eventually start bombarding you with fundraising pleas.

Broke, out of gas, with 662 political appointee jobs unfilled, and desperate for some sign that the investigative apparatus of the Federal Government won't find evidence that the Russians fed them cash--that's your new president.

Dark days are ahead.

An Awful Day For America Made Worse by an Awful Speech

Speaking to a mostly empty mall, the President spoke with vengeance and disdain about everything around him. This will forever be known as the "American Carnage" speech.

Make no mistake about it--this was the worst inaugural speech ever delivered. It had no eloquence or poetry, just a man with no desire to appeal to anyone beyond the screaming crazies who have populated his rallies. His dark themes are betrayed every time someone refreshes themselves with the facts at hand but that's on you. The media will never stop covering this man because he is saving their companies with the revenue generated by the ratings he delivers.

His dystopian view of America is so out of touch with reality that it must shock people to discover how low unemployment actually his, how cheap gas happens to be, and how the crime rate has dropped over the last few decades. I did not hear him make anything other than juvenile promises no one could possibly keep.

Today, hate was normalized. You can win the presidency, too, as long as you are willing to tap into the worst aspects of American civic life. And white nationalism--don't forget that, too. The ones who come after Trump will be worse and probably more successful.

His speech was a national embarrassment. In the capitals of the world, there must be rueful laughter. What the hell was that? America is wealthy, overfed, safe, and brimming with choices.

The speech was akin to what they put in satirical screenplays, but we're now living inside of a shitshow. It was nationalistic in tone and unmistakable in who he was speaking to. It was the equivalent of a low-rent landlord being given a chance on the local news to beg people to come and rent from him. There's no hot water, and the pipes leak, and those are cats, not roaches. What's not to like? Come on, what do you have to lose?

It was hard to watch because I know what bullies look like and sound like. Today we heard what the middle school child who has just pushed down all the weak kids around him sounds like when given a chance to do the right thing. He sounds whiny, displaced, and disjointed. He sounds out of touch with reality. Make no mistake--here stands the least educated president of the last fifty years. Nobody is as smart as him because he's been keeping the grift going since forever.

He emphasized that America would always come first, and used the phrase "totally unstoppable" when describing what might happen if the country were to unite. Never mind that he spent the first part of his speech turning the majority of Americans who voted against him into enemies to be neither trusted or helped. If there was no resistance to him before, there is now among the speechwriters union of America. What an awful, awful set of remarks. Cheap, flouncy, crass, and vulgar like someone ordering a hot dog from a cart on Fifth Avenue. It was the language of a man who is used to having people grovel at his feet for a temporary job.

This is the nightmare, writ large. A man who wrote his own speech and arrived with a disjointed, immature and jingoistic laundry list of beefs. There was nothing in that speech that appealed to anyone save those who would like to see their neighbor thrown into the street by the County Sheriff.

"We all bleed the same red blood of patriots."

Ghastly. There are no words for how terrible this man is. There is no light behind his eyes, just reptilian rage.

Bane's speech in The Dark Knight Rises was more hopeful, more life affirming than this one, so, no wonder Trump borrowed heavily from it.

God help us all.

And no, President Obama did not applaud, as far as I could see. He stood up in shock, and that is where we all are, anyone decent who understands what just happened.

We are all in shock.

Denny Needs His Child Molester Hush Money Back

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="992.0"] Good times... Good times... [/caption]

Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (far right, above) wants it all back.

Hastert actually wants all of that hush money he paid to the young man who he began molesting at the age of 14 as a refund of sorts.

I'm not making this up.

Child molester Dennis Hastert wants his victim to pay up.
The infamously anti-gay former House Speaker wants "James Doe"—formerly identified in court proceedings as “Individual A”—to refund $1.7 million in hush money he paid out after molesting Doe, then just 14 years old, during a wrestling trip decades ago. Hastert was then a high school teacher and athletic coach before striking it big in Republican politics.
When James Doe found out he wasn’t Hastert’s only victim a decade ago, he confronted Hastert and began receiving cash payments for his silence. The victim said that Hastert promised him $3.5 million if he did not speak to authorities about the abuse.

Hastert believes that the two had an enforceable contract. If Hastert gave him money, the young man would not tell anyone that Hastert was a child molester.

Now, would it be unfair of me to point out that Hastert is a Republican? Would it be unfair of me to point out that the last three or four Republican speakers have been, shall we say, an unmitigated disaster and a horrorshow for the country to witness in public? I'll just leave all this out there for you to decide.

Tanks on Parade in the New Banana Republic

It's really, really hard to find photos of American tanks being paraded through our major cities because we don't fucking do that because we're not a fucking banana republic or dictatorship--at least not until Friday at noon:

Donald Trump will receive a 20-plane flyover when he is inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States on Friday, the Pentagon told The Huffington Post. A source involved in the planning of the event told the website that Trump’s team suggested using tanks and missile launchers in the parade, “Red Square/North Korea-style.” The military reportedly rejected the request because the tanks would destroy the roads, and because the optics of such an event would be unfavorable. On Wednesday, Trump told The Washington Post that he wants to be a “great cheerleader for the country” by holding military parades down Pennsylvania Avenue.

A nation that is truly strong does not put the military on parade. It puts it in the field, where it can train for war and it puts it in places where it can deter weaker nations from being attacked. The president elect is so out of touch with American norms and the proper way of doing things that all he knows is what he has seen of dictatorships that he admires and wants to emulate.

He wants to see intercontinental ballistic missiles being driven through town to show everyone we can kill millions. Fully three generations of decent American military men would recoil in horror at the thought, and would cry real tears if they could see how weak and feckless we are about to become.

Trump Thinks Rap Isn't American Music

More proof that everything associated with the Trump Regime comes down to racism and white nationalism:

The reason why Donald Trump didn’t ask Kanye West to perform at his inauguration have been revealed.
Trump’s inauguration has been hit with many problems so far. A host of artists have either turned down invitations to perform or pulled out of planned events.
However, Michael Flatley and his Lord of the Dance troupe have reportedly been booked for Donald Trump’s inauguration, while the President-elect has also reportedly managed to book a Grammy-winning singer for his Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration concert. The Roots’ Questlove has since taken to Twitter to say that he would pay her not to perform at the event.
Tom Barrack, the chair of Trump’s Presidential Inaugural Committee, has told CNN that West was not asked to perform at the inauguration because his music isn’t “typically and traditionally American”.

God, that's ignorant. Ignorant as hell, and racist, and just awful.

I'm sorry--I'd love to have positive messages and great posts, but all we have are turds and boiling cauldrons of evil to look at right now. The news is depressing, the reality is stark and unforgiving, and in less than 24 hours, all hell is going to break loose upon the Earth.

Instead of saying fuck it, I'm going to resist. That's all that good people can do. Resist.

Trump Will Eliminate Grants to Stop Violence Against Women

The Trump Regime is going to press hard on cutting government spending. This will, of course, cause great damage not only to the economy but to valuable programs that protect people's rights and to programs that actually save lives. Now, if you think the optics of having a president being sued for sexual assault are bad, think again. This is a president who has bragged about sexually assaulting women, and his budget priorities are in line with efforts to make sure the Federal Government doesn't do anything to stop sexual assaults.

One of the proposed cuts will eliminate grants from the Office of Violence Against Women at the Justice Department:

At the Department of Justice, the blueprint calls for eliminating the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, Violence Against Women Grants and the Legal Services Corporation and for reducing funding for its Civil Rights and its Environment and Natural Resources divisions.

That means that all of this could go away:

Formula Grant Programs
STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant Program

The Shocking Disarray of the Trump Transition

There's a factoid buried in this article that should send shivers up your spine:

According to the Partnership for Public Service, which has advised the Trump transition throughout the process, Trump’s team has nominated 28 of the 690 federal government positions that require Senate confirmation.

How can that be? This is a complete and utter mess. There should be a standard, and if you don't meet it, you don't get to take power. It really does a disservice to this country to win the highest office in the land and then demonstrate that you don't care about anyone or anything by not trying to fill those positions. It's a slap in the face to the American people and it shows a stunning level of contempt for the government. It's unprofessional, unethical, and insane.

At noon on Friday, the United States of America will be vulnerable because of this incompetence. Plain and simple.

Did the Russians Give Trump Money?

Well, this is a bit of a bombshell, isn't it?

The FBI and five other law-enforcement agencies have reportedly been working together for months on an investigation into whether the Russian government covertly sent money to aid President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign. “One of the allegations involves whether a system for routinely paying thousands of Russian-American pensioners may have been used to pay some email hackers in the United States or to supply money to intermediaries who would then pay the hackers, the two sources said,” McClatchy DC reported on Wednesday.

Covert money for a campaign that could barely pay its bills and was shunned for months by big-money Republican donors? Really? Well, that's more than just illegal--that's grounds to throw Trump out of office and call for a do-over.

According to sources who spoke with outlet, the FBI, the CIA, the National Security Agency, the Justice Department, the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and representatives of the director of national intelligence are all involved in the extensive probe. The inter-agency inquiry reportedly began last spring, long before the top cops received information about a dossier, written by a British spy, alleging the Russian government had damaging information on Trump.

No president has ever taken office as unpopular as Trump; no one has ever been accused of half the stuff he's been tainted with. He's being sued left and right for not paying his bills, the legitimacy of his presidency is in tatters, and he has a woman suing him for sexual assault. And now the very same intelligence community he has spent months humiliating has him in their crosshairs. They are following the money, and that means there's a paper trail.

These agencies will need the cooperation of foreign governments, some of whom might be NATO members. Where's this all leading?

Can't wait to see where it goes.

Julian Assange is Still Full of Shit

This is not a surprise at all:

Julian Assange will not hand himself in despite a promise to do so if Chelsea Manning was granted clemency, according to one of his lawyers.
WikiLeaks had pledged in a tweet that its founder would agree to be extradited to the US if Barack Obama granted clemency to Ms Manning, which he did in the final hours of his presidency. Mr Assange's lawyers initially seemed to suggest that promise would be carried through – telling reporters that he stood by his earlier comments – but it appears now that Mr Assange will stay inside the embassy.
The commitment to accept extradition to the US was based on Ms Manning being released immediately, Mr Assange's lawyer told The Hill. Ms Manning won't actually be released until May – to allow for a standard 120-day transition period, which gives people time to prepare and find somewhere to live, an official told The New York Times for its original report about Ms Manning's clemency.

If you really think he's going to turn himself in (and nobody really wants him, let's be honest about that up front), you're fooling yourself. This is one of those promises that isn't going to be kept.

Wingnuts Will Believe Anything

Right wing media outlets were trolled heavily yesterday, and there's a good reason why.

They're idiots.

Look for more disinformation campaigns in the days and weeks ahead. We are about to enter an era where the truth isn't going to resemble anything you've ever seen before. These people will say and do anything to attain power and hold on to power and they will lie repeatedly until people stop questioning them.

Question everything.

Incompetent and Insane

Ladies and Gentlemen, your next Secretary of Education:

On Tuesday, Betsy DeVos, President-elect Donald Trump’s Education Secretary nominee, answered a question about the presence of guns in schools during her confirmation hearing by saying students need protection from grizzly bears.
Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy (D) asked DeVos, “Do you think guns have any place in or around schools?”
DeVos said that is decision “best left to locales and states to decide.”
When Murphy asked her again, DeVos said, “I will refer back to Senator Enzi and the school he was talking about in Wyoming … I would imagine that there is probably a gun in the schools to protect from potential grizzlies.”

There are no words.

A Lawsuit Has Been Filed Against Trump

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="800.0"] With three days to go before his inauguration ,  Donald Trump  is being sued for defamation by a woman who accused him of sexually inappropriate conduct, according to attorney-to-the-stars Gloria Allred , who announced the lawsuit at a press conference this afternoon. Summer Zervos , a former contestant on season five of The Apprentice , first came forward in October to accuse the GOP nominee of sexual assault. Following her short stint on the reality show, Zervos said she approached Mr. Trump about job opportunities in 2007, but instead of being offered employment, Zervos claimed, Trump groped her. “Ms. Zervos was ambushed by Mr. Trump on more than one occasion,” the complaint states. “Mr. Trump suddenly, and without her consent, kissed her on her mouth repeatedly; he touched her breast; and he pressed his genitals up against her. Ms. Zervos never consented to any of this disgusting touching.” With three days to go before his inauguration ,  Donald Trump  is being sued for defamation by a woman who accused him of sexually inappropriate conduct, according to attorney-to-the-stars Gloria Allred , who announced the lawsuit at a press conference this afternoon. Gloria Allred's client is going forward with a sexual assault lawsuit against the President Elect of the United States of America:

A woman has filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump, accusing him of sexual assault.

The woman’s lawyer, Gloria Allred, told the press her client filed a lawsuit on Tuesday.

At least a dozen women previously accused the President-elect of sexual assault and he strongly denied all the claims. Only one person filed a lawsuit against him but dropped the case shortly after she failed to reveal her identity at a press conference.

The claims were made following the leak of a 2005 Access Hollywoood tape, which showed Mr Trump bragging to host Billy Bush about grabbing women's genitals and saying he could get away with it because he was a "star".

Is there anything gutsier than this? To go after the Trump regime in this fashion must mean one of two things. One, they have a strong case with evidence that will hold up in court. Or, two, they're trying to get attention and they have no case.

Which one do you think is more plausible?
