It's the National Defense, Stupid
Friday, July 17, 2009
My beloved Republican Party steps into the breach and whiffs like a stumblebum:
Republican leaders in Congress plan to zero in on the nation’s economy, weighed down by an unemployment rate approaching 10 percent, as key to building momentum for the 2010 elections.
Democrats, who say they and President Obama inherited an economy driven off the rails by President George W. Bush and a GOP Congress, have a simple response: Bring it on.
Harkening back to the Democrats’ 1992 campaign adage — “it’s the economy, stupid” — Republicans are seeking to build on public anxiety and drape the weak economy around the necks of President Obama and the Democratic Congress if they hope to make gains in the 2010 congressional elections. Their daily, relentless message leaves little doubt that this is exactly what they intend to do as they hammer at the president’s $787 billion stimulus package (PL 111-5) and the growing national debt.
Except for the fact that by 2010, the economy will have rebounded and that the stimulus spending will likely have created the jobs necessary to fuel an expansion of the economy, this is "brilliant." And when I put "brilliant" in quotes, it means I really, really think it's as stupid as eating a sack of ass candy on the slow boat to China.
The way to discuss these issues is clear--spending is out of control, corruption in Washington D.C. is rampant, and our national defense is suffering because of a tit-for-tat over who started what war and which party was in charge when the CIA came up with a plan to assassinate members of al Qaeda (hint--it was concocted during that paean to the rule of law, civil liberties and assorted wooly-headed good deeds known as the Clinton Administration). The problem is, I sound like a raving lunatic because of the fact that I still openly and honestly identify myself as a Rockefeller Republican. Well, that and a few other things, but I digress.
The big issue in 2010 will be defense, not the economy. If you don't believe me, I have some $125 a barrel oil to sell you.
